Local network connectivity

I have an Apple TV HD and several other Apple devices in my network. Except for the Apple TV, they all communicate decently among each other, Handoff usually works. Only for the Apple TV, it's difficult:

  • The remote app rarely gets a connection
  • When I buy something, I get a notification "Continue on other Apple device", but no notification arrives on any device

There is a difference in connection: the Apple TV has a wired ethernet connection because wifi-reception is bad behind the screen. However, the ethernet port is part of the same vlan as the Wifi the other devices are on.

Any Ideas on how to fix this? Does this apple magic stuff require IPv6 on the local network?

Do you have more than one router in your network? Is the wired and wireless coming from the same router?

Most routers default to using the same subnet for the LAN, so that all local network traffic is in the same logical network. If you rearrange on the router to divide the network into separate administrative segments, then devices on one part cannot communicate with devices on another part. It is a settings issue.

IPv6 is supported but not mandatory for use. IPv4 is fine too.

Check and compare the network settings for two devices that cannot communicate with each other.

I mix and match ethernet and Wi-Fi all day every day. No reason why that wouldn’t work for you.

Thanks for your reply, I found the problem. There was a configuration error on the switch - my Apple TV was in fact not in the same bridged network as the Wifi - I configured the wrong port. That put the Apple TV in another IP network. The devices could reach each other, but were in a different broadcast domain and thus could not find each other.
