Facetime on Mac saying "Call Failed"

I have a 2021 Mac M1 Max running Mac OS Ventura 13.0.1 (22A400).

Every time I try and use Facetime in any capacity (Video Facetime, Audio Facetime, Wifi connected phone call) the call will come through on my Mac - and upon answering - say "Call Failed".

I have tried logging in and out, restarting, force quitting, etc...

My wifi is Gig up / down

I currently run my mac through an audio interface for output to speakers, but no microphone (just use the built in). I have tried selecting a different speaker and running strictly through the Macbook pro speakers.

My questions is - what's going on? None of this has been an issue in the past until updating to Ventura.

Good news everyone! MOTU released a new driver TODAY (January 10, 2023), which fixes the issue for me.

Hey BrendanBarone,

First, we recommend backing up your Mac and installing the macOS Ventura update to macOS 13.1, that was released yesterday. Updates help by installing bug fixes and security updates: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

If the behavior with FaceTime continues after updating, let's start your Mac to safe mode, sign in to your user account, then complete a normal restart to exit safe mode. Safe mode can help with the checks that are completed during start up and deleting old cache files. Here's a great guide on safe mode, and how to start there: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Apple silicon

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Please note, it can take some time to start up to safe mode. After signing in to your account and reaching the desktop, restart your Mac normally to see if the issue with FaceTime continues.

Keep us posted. Take care!

Thanks so much for the response.

I tried all of that to no avail.

It seems to be when my audio interface is chosen as the output source. It ONLY works if I turn it off completely.

It doesn't work even when I select a different input / output through facetime or change the defaults on system settings.

I use a Motu M2. Looking in to drivers now, but again - it worked fine before.

BrendanBarone,

Good work on getting the issue isolated down. As it looks to be related to the third-party audio interface that's connected, you may wish to try reaching out to the manufacturer for guidance.

In the mean time you may also wish to try testing out the issue in a newly created Admin account on the Mac. This can help to see if the issue is system-wide on the device or specific to something within the current account.

If needed this page can help out there: Add a user or group on Mac

Add a user
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
•Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.

Cheers.

I'm having the same exact issue with my MOTU 8pre-ES interface. This same issue happened in MacOS 12 and took months to fix. I was told by MOTU back then it was because of Apple making security changes that effected the permissions and security. It doesn't happen on Skype for me. This really is annoying because I use FaceTime for about 30 private online music students a weeks and I'm sitting here with a the interface, studio monitors and a nice mic that useless and I have to use the internal speakers and mic from my MacBookPro and can't use about $3500 worth of gear that would help me work better. Please, please, please fix this Apple. Communicate with developers better or issues software updates quicker. In MacOS 12 I somehow was able to fix this issue with some line commands I found and then it came back with another MacOS 12 update and I couldn't fix it and then eventually is was corrected with a later software update but this appeared again with MacOS 13 and didn't get fixed with 13.1. I need a solution to this asap.

For me fix was: Removing the Motu software, all mentioned beyond came back to life!

To have loopback function working with Motu M2, currently by utilizing Rogue Amoeba Loopback software!

The conclusion - Motu interface targeted as a premium in class audio interfaces. The hardware is perfectly answer this claim, but basic requirements: OS compatibility especially Mac latest OS not working properly is ridiculous and it seams a very common problem - read the complains all over internet...

I just tried re-installing the MOTU software and FaceTime still doesn't work. This is the SAME issue that happen in the past with OS 12. Look at this old thread. I remember it vividly. macOS Monterey 12.0.1 - FaceTime fails up… - Apple Community

Why does this only happen with FaceTime and not with Skype? My MOTU 8pre-es works great to play and record music just not FaceTime. I also reviewed my support emails with MOTU and with OS 12 they said it was a security issue from Apple.

I just removed everything and used CleanMyMac to remove other remnants and then restarted and then re-installed. The installer sent me to System Settings to grant permission for an item to install and I thought it was good. The audio played through the MOTU 8pre-es for Apple Music and Skype fine but FaceTime still did the "Call Failed" thing. I know this an Apple issue. They need to fix it ASAP and communicate to developers for anything that might be on their side too.
