Why does my iPhone screen turn off during calls?

Very frequently, my iPhone screen turns off during calls, often when I have the phone on speaker and I need to be able to tap the screen to get touch tones, turn mute on or off, etc. The only thing that gets it out of this is to start holding the power button for a long time.

iPhone XR, iOS 16

No, battery health is over 90%. Do you have any knowledge of needing a new battery being related to this behavior? If not, I have no idea why you would suggest this as a solution. This is not helpful at all.

Time for a new battery, perhaps?

View the Battery Health:

Apple recommends you get a new battery, once the Battery Health reaches 80% or lower. When the Battery Health is 80% or lower, it is time for a new battery.

  1. Go To: Settings
  2. Tap: Battery
  3. Tap: Battery Health
  4. View: [the percentage]
  5. Is it 80% or less?  If so, it is time for a new battery.

Battery Health:

If the Battery Health is low, well, then stand up to what it should. But with 90%, you're fine for now.
