how to delete an app - is it really as simple as moving the app to trash?

Most apps you may just move to trash for uninstall, some apps like an example "Adobe Acrobat" you may need to run uninstaller "Acrobat Uninstaller".
It depends where you are installing from, if it is from App Store very simple moving to trash.
If it is outside the App Store then you may need to check with the developer for instructions to install and uninstall.
