Do I need an adapter to use the Apple Pencil with a 10th gen iPad?

With the iPad 10th generation, what does it mean to need an adapter? Does the pencil need to be plugged into something in order to use it? Or is it only for charging purposes?

Yes, you need an adapter.

The first generation Pencil is charged and paired from iPad10 using the iPad charging cable - and an Apple USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter:

New first generation Pencils now ship with this special adapter in the box along with the Pencil. However, some older stock purchased from retailers may lack the USB-C to Lightning adapter - and may instead have an older Lightning to Lightning Adapter.

For owners of older first generation Pencils, or for “old stock” new Pencils, the new special adapter can be purchased directly from Apple as an accessory.

As such, if purchasing a new first generation Apple Pencil to accompany an iPad10, you might be best advised to visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Retailer that has a high-turnover of stock - and ensure that the Pencil box indicates that the correct adapter is included.

If necessary, open the box in the Store and check that the USB-C/Lightning adapter is present - noting that the older Lightning/Lightning adapter looks very similar to the USB-C/Lightning adapter.

The Apple $9 U.S.D. USB-C to Lightning adapter is needed for the 1st gen Apple Pencil to use with the new base model 10th gen iPad.

The USB-C end of this adapter plugs into the supplied USB-C power/charging cable, which plugs into the iPad and the Lightning end of this adapter is what the 1st gen Pencil plugs into.

This adapter is needed for both device pairing and charging.

If you have a new 10th iPad, this adapter and the iPad power/charging cable are absolutely essential/needed accessories to have, if using an Apple Pencil 1st gen with the new 10th gen iPad.

Best of Luck to You!
