I can't figure out how to remove highlighted words. please help?

Pages Menu Edit > Remove Highlights and Comments.

Backspace highlights and deletes words i don’t think this used to happen earlier, at least not with such regularity as now. When I want to go back one step to insert a comma or a full stop, the last word is being highlighted and instead of inserting what I want, it’s being deleted. That’s extremely annoying and wasting a lot of time. I wonder if there is a setting to stop this from happening?

accidentally highlighted the entire file on Preview how can I undo the highlighted portion which in my case is the whole file without unhighlighting some portion which has been highlighted twice? PS- if your solution is to "select and unhighlight the content" I have that much brain and tried already.
