My grandson would like an Apple Watch (he has an iPhone) but his mother doesn’t want to add another cellular device to her provider. The grandson wants the time and sports timing ability as he runs. Can I buy any watch and simply not activate the cellular connectivity?

When data is needed it will use the iPhone's when close to it or wifi when away from it.
