I’ve read all my messages in my iPhone 13, yet have a persistent red badge indicator that I still have 13 unread messages. I’ve updated ios, turned off notifications, restarted the phone & then turned notifications back on - still those 13 phantom unread text messages☹️

Having Siri read them to me was the only thing that worked for me, too! Thank you!!
You have to literally manually go through every message via Siri
This fixed the issue on my iPhone 13 where 22 messages were unread. The issue is likely due to conversation threads where the most recent message is read and the ones before have been left unread. Apple needs to find a fix. If Siri can detect these unread messages, they are known to the iOS and must show up in unread messages. This is a long standing issue continuing over several generations of iOS
I have this same issue as well and have done those steps numerous times and my messages notifications still say 59 in red

I asked Siri to read all messages. Didn’t work for me. Do I have to let it read all messages literally (too many) or can I stop it mid way?
Correct. She has to read them all. As she reads them, the notifications will start to decrease.

I can't believe this actually worked. The date is 26/05/2023 and I'm on the latest firmware, how has Apple not fixed this bug already. Luckly this trick worked for me. Very frustrating.

That's a great trick and it may come in handy. But it doesn't seem to fix this problem because all of my messages are already marked as read. The badge function has a bug.
But did it come back the next time you got a new message? (It does for me on my iPhone.)
