Missing contact info

I have 100+ contacts that have multiple usernames and passwords saved under the email part of the contact. Earlier this week I noticed that all of them are missing the false emails associated with them that I use to store passwords and usernames. The name of each contact is still there but no other information. I restored from a 1 month old backup from Itunes. The contacts had all the information there for a minute after the restore then the contacts basically went blank again. I restored again and kept it off any internet connection and the contacts stayed. I removed all the emails and put the information under the notes area of each contact but when reconnecting to internet it removed all data again.

Hi carhartt-golfer,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Since this does not happen while your iPhone is offline, it may be due to information syncing from another device. Do you use any other devices for contacts?

We'd recommend starting by checking to see which account these contacts are connected to. You can check that by going to the Contacts app, then Lists in the top lefthand corner. Tap each account individually to see the contacts contained there.

Then, check settings on each device to see which other devices use this email account for contacts. On Mac, you can find that from Contacts app > Contacts > Accounts. On iOS, go to Settings > Contacts > Accounts. Check to see where notes appear and do not appear for the Contacts.

Temporarily disable contacts for the accounts on other devices, then see if the same happens when your iPhone connects to the internet. Steps for Mac can be found in Add contacts from iCloud, Google, and more to Contacts on Mac.

"Temporarily stop using an account

  1. In the Contacts app on your Mac, choose Contacts > Accounts to open Internet Accounts settings.
  2. Select the account on the left, then deselect the Contacts checkbox on the right.

To see the contacts again, select the account’s checkbox to enable the account again."

On iOS/iPadOS, take these steps similar to those from Use other contact accounts on iPhone.

"Add contacts from another account

  1. Go to Settings > Contacts > Accounts, then tap Add Account"
  2. Turn off Contacts.

Take care.
