Try a forced restart.

• Press and quickly release the volume up button

• Press and quickly release the volume down button

• Press and hold the side button.

• When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

The instructions provided byKurtosis12 do not require touching your screen at all. You only press buttons on the edge of the phone. It is the ONLY way to force restart a phone, and it is guaranteed to work if done correctly unless your phone’s hardware is broken. Let me break it down in more detail:

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME UP

     then

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME DOWN

     then

  • Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears (15-30 seconds), ignoring "slide to power off" if it appears

The operative word here is QUICKLY; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky.
