Unable to turn on advanced data protection

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPad Pro 11 inch, and MacBook Air all updated to the appropriate iOS/MacOS versions with a recovery key and recovery contact set up, but I am unable to turn on advanced data protection. I get the following error after confirming my recovery contact, "Something went wrong - There was a problem turning on advanced data protection. try again later".

Has anyone experienced this and were you able to fix it?

I’m getting the same error. I have an iPhone 12 mini, a 2022 Apple Watch SE and I tried to update my PC in iCloud, but gave up on that. I removed the PC from iCloud and set up a recovery key, but I’m getting the error you reported.
