You have to do it more than once because the vulnerability is present more than once.
Apple changed the way that worked because of a recently discovered vulnerability that would allow a hacker to create an unprotected backup of an iOS device without the knowledge of the owner, so Apple add a requirement to always require a passcode to be entered on the phone before backing up to a computer. This to assure that the backup was intentional.
If you want details you can find them in these two links:
So, is anyone able to be conclusive of why we should give our password to ???? We have 5 other iphones in the family and mine is the only one that has a notification to “Confirm Iphone password “ . Why do they need it?? It is a 4 or 6 digit number which is much much easier to crack the code.???
Every time you do a computer backup, because the vulnerability would allow a hacker to create a backup that you didn’t know about between your backups if every backup did not require a passcode on the phone. It’s unlikely, because the hacker would have to hack your computer first, but it is possible and has been demonstrated. I’m sure there will eventually be a better solution, but this was an actively exploited vulnerability, and a “quick and dirty” solution was needed immediately.
Except I haven’t turned on Advance Data Protection.
I am being asked repeatedly as well, but only on iphone and not on ipad. I do not backup daily, in fact the only icloud feature I use is 'find my' so I'm confused as to why this is happening. I have not backed up to a computer for 2 wks, and this message only showed up a couple days ago for the first time.
Thanks for your helpful/informative input Lawrence.
I have had this message, but I have not done any backups since installing either 16.1 or 16.2?
I’m wondering whether Apple classifies other actions like sharing photos/documents to other devices via airdrop or saving material previously stored on iCloud elsewhere on my iPad as “backups”?
I continue to hope the developers fix this problem, but instead they continue to sell the App!
I also had, to me, important information on it!
I go to sign on and it just CLOSES!
If I could go on the cloud to retrieve it I would be extremely happy!
Apple should bar them from their App Store!
I have the same issue, keeps coming back even after I enter the pw and there is no advanced data protection enabled in fact I believe it tells me its not available to me yet so it wouyld be great if Apple support would figure out whats going on and inform us. This is ridiculous!
While it may be legitimate, I disagree that it is a result of Apple concern over a compromised account. I have a phone and an ipad on my account and it is only the phone throwing this message constantly.
I have signed out of icloud on the phone as suggested in other posts since I do not use icloud for anything and never have in many years of having the account anyway, and still get this message - signed in or not. Numerous times in or out, regardless the message keeps coming back.

I hate that. I want automatic backups to both my Mac and the cloud every day.
Did I say I hate that? I really do.
You can have automatic backups to iCloud. You cannot have automatic backups to your computer.
Yeah, it’s now every day or every other day that it keeps asking for me to enter it (and I do enter it each time). I’ve updated, reset, restarted, hard reset… it just did it again this morning after verifying last night.
I’ve done everything. Nothing has helped with this issue. I’m completely up to date on my iOS, and although it’s not happening every day, or multiple times a day, it’s still happening once a week. Has anyone heard any news on how to fix it? I’m on the iPhone 14 512G, running iOS 16.5
This is super annoying useless popup I keep getting every few weeks! None of the suggestions I found and tried worked. I don’t have the advanced protection and I don’t backup. It’s a bug that should be fixed!
Hello ~ I just got this myself and glad to see your response. Thx.

I saw it on my wife’s phone, but not mine.
Hello ~ I myself was concerned.
