Helpful Question, Answer & Solution to How to Get Keyboard Backlight to Work with Windows (10) on BootCamp
Users, including myself, online and not, have asked how to get the keyboard backlight running again. See for example, No keyboard backlight while using Bootcamp - Apple Community (no more replies allowed there, so here we are). The context is running Windows on BootCamp on an Apple laptop. Mine is currently a mid-2014 MacBook Pro. It is a wonderful machine and runs most any software now.
A helpful answer and solution I found through trial and error is:
Boot into Windows. Install BootCamp and all applicable updates for it. Do the requested reboots. If and when the keyboard backlight stops working, quit/exit the latest (2021-22) BootCamp.exe (mine is 5/5/2021) in C-Program Files-BootCamp and replace it with the BootCamp.exe that bears a Date modified of 3/31/2016.
That replacement BootCamp.exe of 3/31/2016 can be extracted from the AppleBcUpdate 6.0.6171, creation date 04/01/2016, size 1,169,023kb. That package can be gotten online through Apple. Extract the BootCamp.msi that archive contains, to a separate folder, and you will find the necessary BootCamp.exe of 3/31/2016.
Then replace the other BootCamp.exe that is in C-Program Files-BootCamp. Then the keyboard backlight will work.
The helpful answer in the link above refers to a BootCamp.tmp file in that directory, to change its extension to exe. That is a good solution iff that tmp file is there. But on my machine, and others', that tmp file is not there, especially after running cleaning routines.
I appreciate that user's input. The solution presented here, however, is the surest and most exact way to get the keyboard backlight running.
This answer should be most helpful to those encountering this issue.
