I have a 3rd gen 2021 iPad Pro and the screen cracked without dropping. It was in backpack and case. The metal wrap around has plastic insert at bottom that I believe allows the iPad to flex ever so slightly. I paid for pro as it’s supposed to be well made. So I’m now responsible for screen replacement of 499 due to what I believe is defect, shouldn’t this be on Apple ?

Having a unprotected iPad, with no protective case, in a loose backpack, is a recipe for any kind of device abuse/damage.
You should have purchased paid, 2-years, extended AppleCare+ warranty for your expensive iPad Pro.
You didn't do this. You gambled nothing bad would happen to your iPad and your gamble was wrong.
If you feel strongly about your viewpoint, you need to take up this issue Apple support.
