Apple Music not working on cellular…

Hi everyone

firstly, I know this has been asked/answered several times previously…however most of the responses are fairly old and I’ve literally tried everything, but still the issue persists.

whenever I’m in the car (connected to CarPlay) or generally out and about, I go to choose music to listen or ask Siri to play music, and it just sits there, doesn’t play and finally displays either the ‘Not authorised’ or other reason that the song can’t be played….it then moves onto the next song, and can’t play that, so moves on and can’t play that etc etc…

I’ve got an iPhone 13 fully updated to iOS 16.2.

as previously stated, I’ve tried all of the previous solutions (toggle streaming on and off within settings, restart phone (hard and soft), open and close music app etc etc) but nothing has resolved the issue.

for further reference, I’m on Sky Mobile and the problem exists whether I’m on 3, 4 or even 5G…

please help as this is becoming VERY annoying indeed!?!

Oh, Apple Music seems to work fine at home when I’m on WiFi…

Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the app? And a hard reset of your device Force restart iPhone - Apple Support?

Separately, the cellular indicator top right doesn’t show data - something like 3G/4G etc. It seems to me that your carrier isn’t providing you with data.

Evening,

I actually started another thread since this one detailing exactly what I’ve tried as nothing has worked;

Apple iPhone 13 running iOS 16.2

SIM / Network provider - Sky Mobile (UK) no data restrictions

Cars - 2022 Cupra Formentor (VAG car if you're reading this in the US and don;t know what a Cupra is!) & 2022 Hyundai Tucson N-Line, both MMI firmware fully updated.

Having searched on here previously, here's a list I've 'solutions' I've tried so far with no joy;

  • Full factory reset of the phone
  • Toggled into airplane mode then back again
  • Gone into 'Music' within settings to ensure that 'Mobile data' is activated - also toggled this off and back on
  • Reduced all audio quality down to the bear minimum/lowest within the above 'Settings/Music'
  • Logged out of apple ID then back in
  • Had Sky Mobile resend all of the Carrier settings to my phone
  • Deleted Music App (completely and not retaining playlists...) and reinstalled from App Store
  • Problem exists regardless of mobile signal (full 5G quite often where I am)
  • 'Forgotten' and re-established link with both cars
  • Tried both Cable (official Apple) attached to vehicles USB and CarPlay wireless
  • Downloaded and used Spotify (free version) through CarPlay and this works perfectly!
  • Music works just fine when I'm at the gym or out walking (non-WiFi obviously)
  • Tried a friends SIM card (different network)

None of the above has resolved the problem and I'm now left with paying for a service that I can't actually use while I'm in the car!

Apple music works fine when on WiFi at home etc.

My preference is to stick with Apple Music as I prefer it to Spotify, but this issue is simply ridiculously frustrating now and I've only noticed it since getting my 13, which just so happened to coincide with the release of iOS16.2.

The only thing I think I haven't done is have the actual handset replaced by Apple (it's still under Warranty), but I also think this issue is a wider problem and thats not likely to resolve it....

in addition to the above, I received a call from an Apple Support Engineer three days ago who talked me through another idea - switching off ScreenTime…I did this, restarted the phone and went for a drive around the block (to ensure it was off Wi-Fi) and it’s seemed to work - great!

however, on the way to work the following day under some more thorough testing (longer journey) actually it wasn’t resolved at all - the same issue still exists.

it’s very obviously a software issue that Apple MUST be aware of, but doesn’t seem to have any solution at all….

giving VERY strong consideration now to ending my subscription and just plumping for Spotify instead…which works absolutely fine through CarPlay…🤷🏻‍♂️🤬

I’ve tried the hard reset, no joy…

it shows 3/4/5G when I’m out and about - at home at moment though so shows WiFi instead….

the only thing I haven’t tried is deleting and reinstalling the app….sounds stupid but where do I find it to reinstall it?? Is it in the App Store? Will it lose all my playlists etc? (Which is fine, I’m not bind to them if it means it’s going to solve the issue!!)

Hi, hope you’ve had a great festive period..

sadly I’ve now exhausted everything I can think of - changed setting within CarPlay and also settings within my cars MMI which was trying to use the phone as a WiFi hotspot (or the other way round) everytime I got in - I’ve now disabled that which also disables the ability to connect my phone to CarPlay wirelessly - I though this had resolved the issue by me simply now using a cable to connect the phone to CarPlay, however nope, the same issue still exists…

I really don’t know what else to try - could it be a problem with my SIM perhaps and worth asking my carrier (Sky Mobile UK) for a new one?

or should I try completely factory resetting the phone first??

Your carrier is simply a reseller of O2, contacting them is guaranteed to be a useless (though thoroughly polite) goose chase. That said, what sort of data plan do you have and do other services work over cellular?

At any rate, yes it’s looking like a Sky issue. You can confirm by using a non-Sky SIM, either by borrowing a friend’s or purchasing a prepaid card. Do update.

Thanks (again!!) for your reply - yeah everything else works absolutely fine over my data plan, it’s just Apple Music that doesn’t…

im thinking of trying a full factory reset of the phone (after backing up to iCloud obviously!) to see if that solves the issue…

That’s fine but I wouldn’t restore from backup in that case - take screenshots of the apps and key system settings and install/set them manually once the phone comes up as new. It’s slightly more work but prevents old issues from surfacing.

Hi and happy new year!!

right, you’re gonna get bored of me, if you aren’t already…?!

so just before I decided to take the plunge on the full factory reset, I did a little experiment by installing Spotify and used that on my journey to work today on both CarPlay and out of the car, while on mobile data - it worked absolutely perfectly…zero buffering and super slick switching between tracks too (albeit I’ve only got the free version with ads..)

so the problem therefore MUST be with Apple Music specifically.

anymore suggestions before I book a Genius Bar appointment??

Hi. I have the same problem. I used to have an XS and it was fine, my wife still has hers and it’s fine (Apple Music on cellular).

My 13 pro had never worked despite multiple iOS updates. The only thing that does work is to activate a VPN.

it just me something to do with the way the 13pro / Apple Music stream data. Did you get any further?

Evening back at ya!

Cupra Formentor eh, they look nice - bit short on boot space I thought.

So I have the 13 pro also on Sky Mobile fully up to date. Since I got it last year it hasn’t streamed Apple Music on mobile data - ever - unless VPN was active. EVERYTHING else works fine.

I missed the distinction in your post that mobile data was fine except when hooked up to car play.

I just did a network settings reset and it’s playing on 5G now - will see if it works in the car in the morning. If so then I’m fixed and it was easy.

good luck!

That’s interesting- I’ve also updated/re-downloaded the carrier settings from Sky, in the hope that it would sort it…but alas, the CarPlay issue still exists…

what exactly did you do to reset your carrier settings??

(Formentor is the smaller of our two cars - the Hyundai is the ‘long trip/all family’ car!)

Hi Mark

any joy yet? I have the same issue and funnily enough am with Sky Mobile. My wife on the family plan with 02 doesn’t seem to be experiencing this issue?

im getting to the point now of moving to Spotify if not resolved quickly. I have tried everything you have so far.

Nope - the issue is solely with CarPlay, it’s an obvious software issue, that Apple must be aware of, yet don’t seem to be implementing any form of solution….

have you tried your wife’s phone connected to CarPlay and can confirm that it works fine?

both my wife’s and my phone are on Sky Mobile, as is my brothers (3 different brands of car too so we can rule that out…) and CarPlay doesn’t stream smoothly on any of them at all.

as I’ve said before though, when I’m out walking, it’s faultless, so almost certainly exclusively a CarPlay issue. 🤷🏻‍♂️
