I am trying to update the first update since I bought this computer and it will not do it. it starts the process one says something went wrong each time. I have plenty of room

Is your current macOS up to date(?) The current stable release of Monterey including bug fixes 12.6.2
if no insight try your update/upgrade from a Safeboot—How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
