Your download may be corrupt. You could delete the download and try it again. Or if you have a flash drive to install a bootable install. Create it and install it that way.How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

You do not paint a very big picture, I do understand "wont let me update"...

what exact Mac...?

Are you logged into your admin account?

Are you getting to the App Store?

Are you getting any error messages/ dialog box / anything?

Does the down load start and then fail?

Is this a personal computer or bound to Enterprise / MDM?

try booting into SafeBoot mode and try again from this environment: SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

I can say all known to cause issues, therefore—

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

What OS are you currently running? macOS Monterey is compatible with these computers - Apple Support. Did you download it from the Apple App Store?https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-monterey/id1576738294 Click (view in Mac App Store). You can click and run it from the application folder or create a usb flash installer.
