is mirroring the same as airplay?

I have Apple TV and lots of streaming apps. I watch Acorn TV, and the app stopped working. Sadly Acorn has no live help, and they send me articles that have nothing to do with my app not working. So my only choice is to airplay it from my phone or my iMac.

First, it used to be called airplay, and the icon looked like a computer screen. I don't have that on my iMac. Now I have something called mirroring. Is that the same as airplay now?

Acorn works via my browser so I'd like to be able to stream it from my iMac (which is up to date on OS) to my Apple TV. Here is what I've been trying.

First both are on the same wifi network. I get it playing in my browser and I click the icon on the upper right of my screen that looks like two switches. It has screen mirroring in there. Once I do that everything shrinks on my screen. Everything. The video, my stuff on my desktop, my dock. they all shink and I can't really see them well. And the video which was playing when I started this mirroring thing, stops playing.

I pick mirroring with the living room TV (only one in the house) and I see my desktop on the TV. But the problem is it mirrors my "shrunken" desktop and the video won't play. How do I get it to work and why is it shrinking?

Thank you,

Susan
