Why does apps say i am using screen reader?

Another user asked this question about a year ago, but there was never a solution posted:

Every app detects that I am using a screen reader, although I am not

Hello everyone,

Every app detects that I am using a screen reader, although I am not. I am running macOS Monterey 12.0.1, and I also have an M1 MacBook Pro, which never had this issue.

How to fix it?

I have seen this same prompt pop up from time to time, most recently with Discord. I checked all my settings, and screen reader isn't enabled anywhere within my accessibility options. How do I disable this function? Does anyone know of Apps that inherently have screen reader capabilities or mimics it?

Hi IntrovertedLifestyle,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're seeing a message that says your computer is using VoiceOver when using various apps. Check in System Settings for Speak Selection enabled and VoiceOver.

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click Spoken Content on the right.
3. Turn off “Speak selection.”

Have your Mac speak text that’s on the screen

Turn VoiceOver on or off on Mac
*Press Command-F5. If VoiceOver is on, pressing the keys turns it off.
*Use Siri. Say something like: “Turn VoiceOver on” or “Turn VoiceOver off.” Learn how to use Siri.
*If your Mac or Magic Keyboard has Touch ID, press and hold the Command key while you quickly press Touch ID three times.
*Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Accessibility  in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). Click VoiceOver on the right, then turn VoiceOver on or off.

Regards.

It begs the question.

What exact version of Ventura is installed on this computer

User Profiles are not always accurate but your question has the by-line iMac 27″, macOS 13.0

Accurate ?

Current stable Version is Ventura 13.1

Two links below worthy of the user attention if not already using Ventura 13.1

Keep your Mac up to date

About the security content of macOS Ventura 13.1 - Apple Support (CA)

Otherwise >>

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

5 - Still this issue - post back for additional suggestions
