One of our MBP 15" laptop has the rear case separating, there are old reports from more than 10 years ago of this sort of thing happening, I can't find recent reports. Anyone seen something similar? Is it the battery expanding (which I presume is potentially very bad)
The battery is swollen. You should stop using the laptop to keep it from swelling any further. You should have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with a repair estimate.
