Spotlight must re-index

Occasionally when you delete files from external drive, spotlight does not update to reflect the changes..

eg.. I did a spotlight search today for all files related to *.xml, but when they show up in search, right click and "open containing folder", the file in the directory is not there..

Once I reindexed drive (deleting hidden .spotlight folder), it was ok..

Why is this constantly needed ? Spotlight should be updating to reflect changes.. "on-the-fly"

Hello Tech198,

It can take some time for spotlight to update changes. We'd recommend restarting your computer next time and see if the issue persists after, as that should be all that's needed to update files as opposed to reindexing.

Per Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support:

On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
If you don’t want app windows that are open to reopen when your Mac restarts, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”
A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black. Some computers also don’t show an active power light or have any fan or drive noise.

Thanks!
