Notification: "update Apple ID settings"

Recently a red circle appeared on my "system settings" icon, like if there is a software update, but it says "update Apple ID settings".

I don't use an Apple ID, is there anyway I can dismiss this notification or do I just live with the red circle now?

what if you're logged into your apple account and it is still there...then how do you get rid of it and why is it even there?

This recently appeared for me too. Also, clicking on the Apple logo top left of the menu bar shows "1 Update"

I am logged in with my Apple ID already.

When I click continue on 'Update apple Settings' in System Settings, I'm asked to "Enter your password to set up iCloud". I enter my Apple ID, and password and nothing changes.

The '1 Update' on the Apple logo is still there, the red bubble is still there, and I can loop around this until the end of eternity...

Thing is, I don't use iCloud

Hi there theKalash,

Let's team up and confirm more details about what's happening, along with ruling out some general possible causes:

  1. We understand that 'Update Apple ID settings' shows in your Mac System Settings, but what shows when you select it?
  2. You also mentioned that you don't use an Apple ID, but we're confused about what you meant by this. Does your name show at the top left corner of the System Settings screen?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

Cheers!

That's a rather broad statement. And one that not everyone might agree with. Personally, I find benefit in being logged in and, having read Apple's privacy documents, feel comfortable with it. It's best not to assume that everyone has the same needs and concerns as you do.

Wow. Talk about missing the point. Your needs are met by being able to sign in. Our needs are not being met by Apple requiring us to sign in or be spammed with notifications. How is that not obvious?

theKalash,

Thanks for providing that additional screenshot.

Because you are not currently signed into an Apple ID, it is likely that the badge and section "Update Apple ID Settings" will remain on the Apple ID System Settings page.

As stated previously, without an Apple ID there are several Apple Services that may not work as expected, additionally an Apple ID would be required to update your macOS and other Apple software on your Mac.

Take care!

I don't use Ventura but I suspect that setting an Apple ID on Apple equipment is becoming an integral part of their functioning. As was mentioned earlier it may be set to check for updates and need an Apple ID in order to do so. I've been using a Mac for 30 years and in the early days it was a stand-alone piece of equipment that you could easily update, personally configure and tweak the software, and online features barely existed. Now with Internet security issues, multiple hardware being integrated through iCloud, plus all of Apple's marketing with bells and whistles, it's getting difficult to have a plain old computer without having an Apple ID. In your case I don't think it so much wants you to "update" settings as simply sign in so it can then use that to access other features such as software updates.

I believe you have missd the point. I was disagreeing wiht the contention that "being continuously logged into Apple adds no value to the consumer". I was pointing out that it adds value for some consumers. I understand that you are not one who feels that way.
