Hey Anthony1974lfc,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. If this only happens when you are on phone calls, this may be due to your proximity sensor. This is the sensor that will detect your face is close to the screen when you are on calls and darken the display to prevent buttons being pressed accidentally. If this happens when your face is close to the screen, this is expected.

If this happens when you take your iPhone away from your face, there may be something else covering the sensor. Try removing any case or screen protector that you're using, then test again. Cleaning your iPhone will also help if there is anything on the screen that might be preventing the sensor from working properly.

Best of luck.

Hi after taking the case of, and inspecting the screen protector, I decided this wasn’t the problem. After putting up with it, I got a little bit frustrated and removed the protector and the case. It worked, I’ve now put the case back on and left the screen protector on. It’s great, maybe I should have done this straight away. Many thank yous…..✋
