Changing font and text formatting in outgoing email

I was composing a reply email on iPhone and used C&P to insert several reference numbers from earlier emails. Using iPhone SE, Mail app, iOS16.1.2.

The copied stuff in one case had an embedded hyperlink and the other was originally in a weird tiny font. I wanted both of them in the plain default font but couldn’t find a way to “remove hyperlink” or set font back to default. Not only that; after I pasted in weird font everything else keyed was in same font! I could change font size or use other styles but can’t get back to DEFAULT settings 😫

You can usually change the font of imported (C&Pd) matter by selecting the text in question and then nominating the font required from the font list. Alternatively, select all the text in the document and then nominate the font you want it to be in.

When you add or insert text, the font of the character (or space) that is immediately to the left of the cursor will be the one used for the new text, unless you nominate a different font immediately before starting to type your new text.

As to the removal of the hyperlink, I can't find any way to do that, perhaps someone else will post a solution. What I would do is delete the problematic part of the pasted matter and retype it manually. If you want to ensure that the font of your replacement text matches that of the rest of the document, replace the last letter of the previous word as well to ensure that the correct font info is picked up from that word.

Hello BlueKatKLJ,

We'd like to provide you with a few that can assist you with changing the font style for your emails:

"Write an email message

  1. Tap the Compose button.
  2. Tap in the email, then type your message.
  3. Tip: With the onscreen keyboard, try sliding your finger from one letter to the next to type, lifting your finger only after each word.
  4. To change the formatting, tap the Expand Toolbar button above the keyboard, then tap the Text Format button.
  5. You can change the font style and color of text, use a bold or italic style, add a bulleted or numbered list, and more.
  6. Tap the Send button to send your email."

Best wishes!

I have tried a few experiments. I can't be sure what the font used by Messages is but, if I set my Mail's default font to Helvetica Neue, text imported from Messages matches well enough.

Strangely, text copied from Messages won't paste in to Pages, but text from Pages will paste in to Messages, but it will of course be converted to the Messages font. Text copied from Pages, when pasted in to Mail will retain the font used in Pages, although not all fonts are compatible with Mail.

I'm afraid that those of us who are used to using programs like InDesign and to whom fonts really matter, have to accept that Messages has only one font (and only needs one font), and that Mail's font handling is limited but perfectly adequate for the job it does. When there are limitations, compromise can sometimes lead to frustration.

As to Apple’s `rabid fandom’, give it a while and you may come to understand the way some of us feel. Personally, I wouldn't buy anything else. Enjoy your iPhone!

I had already looked at the Apple support iPhone user guide tips and done some Googling before I asked the question.

Still have no idea how to REMOVE formatting that was embedded in any C&P material (hyperlinks for instance).

Also no clue how to return to the default font once another font has been used.

Thanks for trying but you haven’t answered my question.

Wightrabbit - that helps some BUT strangely enough, the default font for iPhone Message App isn’t IN the list of fonts in the format menu. So select all all select default isn’t possible.

I think that is true in other apps that come on the phone (Notes for example.) Isn’t that just dumb!

Not being able to unlink a hyperlink, forcing you to basically stick the copied info down so you CAN see it to key manually and then delete it, is also annoyingly dumb. The font that carries in gets stuck as well!?!?

This is my first Apple device ever. After 9 months, I just don’t see why it has such rabid fandom.
