Getting a message that I need to update my software in order to connect my brand new iPhone 14 Pro to my computer. My computer is running High Sierra 10.13.6. What does it want to update???

The update doesn't change the features or functionality of iTunes at all. It merely updates the drivers it uses to allow it to communicate with the version of iOS that's installed on the phone.

It needs an updated iTunes, go ahead & install it. :)

iTunes needs an update to communicate with it. It’s perfectly fine. Let your Mac install the update. It is NOT a macOS update, just an update to iTunes.
