How can I remove "Hide My Email" from a suggested email address on my keyboard

The iOS keyboard now suggests "Hide My Email | Hide My Email" whenever I try to compose an email to myself. This is very annoying. I send email to myself frequently using the Gmail app on iPhone. It was not happening until I upgraded from 16.1.2 to 16.2. How can this be fixed?

Hello ThirdClick,

Welcome back to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help you get the most from your iPhone and disable this feature from appearing.

Try using these steps to deactivate your Hide my Email address:

"Create and manage Hide My Email addresses in Settings on iPhone

When you subscribe to iCloud+, you can use Hide My Email to keep your personal email address private. With Hide My Email, you can generate unique, random email addresses that forward to your personal email account, so you don’t have to share your real email address when filling out forms or signing up for newsletters on the web, or when sending email.

You can create and manage Hide My Email addresses in Settings . Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Hide My Email, then do any of the following:

  • Create a Hide My Email address: Tap Create New Address, then follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Deactivate a Hide My Email address: Tap an address (below Create New Address), then tap Deactivate Email Address. After you deactivate the address, it no longer forwards emails to you."

This Apple Support page has the full details: Create and manage Hide My Email addresses in Settings on iPhone - Apple Support

If this only happens in the Gmail app, you might want to reach out to the developer for additional support.

We hope this helps to isolate and resolve the issue so Hide my Email the option isn't getting in your way.

Cheers!

Hello ThirdClick,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. To clarify, do you only experience this issue in the Gmail app or does it occur in the Apple Mail app as well?

If this is unexpected behavior with the Gmail app, the following steps may help to resolve the issue:

" 1. Force the app to close. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

2. Restart your iPhone. This may seem like a simple steps but can often resolve issues related to the software.

3. See if updates are available for the app, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, then scroll down to see if updates are available.

4. Delete the app. When you do this, you might lose data that was stored in the app. Then redownload the app. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed."

More details here: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

We hope this helps.

Take care.

Justin, thanks for your message. Unfortunately, this does not help.

These instructions were easy to find and I had already checked them.

These instructions only explain how to manage individual anonymized email addresses created by the Hide My Email functionality. After you use the functionality to create an anonymized address for a specific recipient, you might want to delete it so they can no longer reach you by sending to it. That's what these instructions describe. These instructions do not say how to disable *all* Hide My Email functionality, nor do they explain how to tell iOS to stop suggesting using the Hide My Email functionality.

The feature that is causing the problem is the keyboard suggesting that I use the Hide My Email functionality for creating a new anonymized email address. I would prefer that it suggests that I use my email address (unhidden).

Best regards.

Grace, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, this doesn't help.

This is new behavior in 16.2. As I wrote, it appeared when I upgraded from iOS 16.1.2 to 16.2.

I don't use the Apple Mail app. Deleted it ages ago, because I found the Gmail App to be much better, at least for me. (Although I see that the Apple App Store reviews vastly prefer the Gmail App too.)

Just to see what would happen, I re-installed the Apple Mail app and logged into my gmail account. I started composing a message, and it didn't even try to suggest any addresses! I had to type the first few characters of my own address to get the address book to scroll to it. This means that the Apple Mail app doesn't appear to have the foundation of this feature of recommending addresses; although maybe it would eventually start showing this after watching me use it for a while?

The problem appears to be with the iOS keyboard, which provides suggestions (at least it does in the Gmail App). Previously, it would show my email address as the suggestion, because I send emails to myself frequently --- reminder notes. Now it shows "Hide My Email" when sending to myself, which is... both useless and frustrating.

I'd just like to turn off the "Hide My Email" functionality completely. I don't want to use it in any situation ever. How do I just disable it?
