Not able to swipe to next video in Messages

I feel like I’m going crazy here. Was this an option that has been removed, or am I remembering it wrong?

When in your camera roll and you have several videos (one after another) in the list, you can press play and then swipe either way to go to the next or previous video.

In Messages, you can swipe back and forth on photos, but not videos. They play with the same play button, but swiping only scrubs the current video.

I either have to select “done” and go back to the message list, or the four square icon at the top if there are a large group.

is there a way to get the swipe option back for multiple videos? Am I doing something wrong, or was this never a thing in Messages?

An update to this is something I noticed just now.

a group of videos have the above issue of not being able to swipe between them and it only scrubs the current video.

however, if any item in the media group is a photo and I click on the photo first, I will now be able to swipe back and forth between all videos in that group. I can play and then swipe to the next video with no issues. Or to go back to the previous video.

it only works if you start by swiping away from a still image fist. If the media group contains a photo, but the first item is a video, I’d have to go to the photo first, and swipe back to the beginning of the group.
