Emojis don't appear in control strip in iMessages.

Running Mac Pro Ventura 13.1 . I have tried all options listed under keyboard in systems preferences. Also tried selecting default strip but they don't appear. The only way I've been able to access them quicker than clicking on the emoji is by turning on " use fn to show emojis" in keyboard settings. I believe this has been happening since before Ventura, six months anyway.

Does it only appear in control strip in certain apps? (I also selected the use control strip for apps option but that didn't work.)

Is there more information about this recently that fixes it, is it a change or is it something Apple is working on?

Thanks,

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.5

After I made sure I had your settings, adding "Show control strip" I tried every app, took touchbar screenshots once opened and after I touched the smilie. In Word, Mail, and text edit, the smilie expanded and the close x worked as expected.

In Notes and Messages, when I touch the smilie icon the touchbar is blank except for the x and the x doesn't work UNTIL I take a screenshot. Then it resets. I think I have a bug if you don't get the same results in Notes.

Thanks for the response. I'll start trying with others and document. It's been a long time since I saw your spread on my control strip. And that shortcut doesn't work for me. I can press FN and get them after I chose that option in strip settings but not what I wanted.

I don't believe you will ever see them on the "Control Strip" portion of the Touchbar.

The example above was from the Mail.app specifically— the Control strip remained unchanged...

Make changes to your TouchBar Settings, experiment, make changes, to get back to what you want to see for application specific Touchbar...

Well it is not a perfect science.

I do not use Messages on Mac however to test or say more.

Experiment with other apps and compare your results.. ex Mail I see options for emojis..

I've changed Fn back and forth but it seems when I turn on "Show control strip" I don't get the emoji options, even here.

That looks like progress...

did you touch the emoji icon on the left to expand those options...?

I am seeing some inconsistencies here. Once you get this far, swipe between full screen applications and compare your results, sometimes it presents the condensed emoji on the far left, sometimes it presents an X.

ex. Notes. Sometime it presents, sometimes it does not.

To be honest I never use the Touchbar to add emojis anywhere, to say more. Full Stop.

However I do use the keyboard shortcut all the time to add emojis: Control Command Spacebar

Depending on the app... when I tap the Smile it expands in Mail Word and text edit but in Notes and messages it reverts to the x and then it will not close until I take a screenshot and then it resets. I think I have a bug. I've taken Touchbar Screenshots of all apps with the settings from leroydouglas' screen. I thought I was getting somewhere when I brought up messages and I saw the compose icon and smilie but as soon as I touched the smilie all I got was an x and a blank strip.

First of all I changed my settings to this with FN opening dictation on the main screen. After that, my emojis look like the bottom strip in a Facebook post and mail and HERE, but no matter what settings in messages it looks like the top strip and when I touch the smilie it changes to an x on the left side of the bar. That's all. When I touch the x it doesn't do anything. What is it supposed to do? All of this is helpful so far. I just remember always being able to pick from several emojis in messages before. Now, when I push Fn it shows me the expanded control strip but I would like for it to show all the time, I think. . . 😗 I'm afraid to change anything though because whatever incorrect setting I had left me unable to auto fill info from contact card. Thanks for you help. Martie

When I added Show Control Strip, I get this here and no emojis as in the above process.

I've changed Fn back and forth but it seems when I turn on "Show control strip" I don't get the emoji options, even here. So for now, i'll revert to the one in previous post and do more research and testing. I lose track of what I've tried so I need to label my screenshots.

Thanks again.
