iPhone 14 Pro Max can’t seem to handle darker skin tones

I’ve been playing with the camera today and specifically taking selfies I noticed that once the photo is taken and it does its “auto enhance” the photo seems fine but it then auto-darkens the image. I have a darker skin tone and it seems to be creating this weird and unnatural darkening. Not only that but even shadows are absolutely demolished when the photo is taken.

I have a 12 Pro and it’s outputting better quality photos in these certain situations. It’s auto-enhancing actually seems to be doing what it’s supposed to which is creating a better-quality image. Is anyone else seeing any issues?

iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 16

Actually it happens most of black skin users use filters to take photos. Before the taking photos phone screen shoes more bright image. But when we took the photo photo was adjusted color and getting more darker. That was the issue.

When we use camera with other app. there was not any issue. Camera app uses with filters. At that time I have found this issue.

This issue has all front and back cameras.

Yes it happens all lighting conditions. but under low light condition photos are more darker.

Hello P_Nirman,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We want to make sure we provide you with the help and support you need. To help, we’d like the following details:

- Do you notice these camera quality issues within the built-in Camera app, another app, or all apps that use the camera? If a specific app/apps, which app(s)?

- Is this happening with both the rear and front cameras?

- Does the issue show in the preview before taking a photo?

Also, does this also happen in all lighting conditions, or more in darker environment versus bright?

To get started, please check out this helpful link:

About the Camera features on your iPhone

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Hello P_Nirman,

Thanks for that info.

You can leave feedback, as the auto-enhance feature isn't something to be turned off: Product Feedback - Apple

Or instead, you will likely need to learn more about taking photos with this new feature. Start here: Take great photos and videos - Apple Support

Also, in the article that was provided earlier, there are options to adjust settings prior to the photo, which should help:

"Adjust your focus and exposure

Before you take a photo, the camera automatically sets the focus and exposure, and face detection balances the exposure across many faces. You can use Exposure Compensation Control to precisely set and lock the exposure for upcoming shots.

  • Just tap the arrow , then tap  and adjust your exposure level. The exposure locks until the next time you open the Camera app.

Exposure Compensation Control is available on iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and later with iOS 14 or later."

Thanks.
