Confirm iPad / iPhone passcode to keep using iCloud

Why am I getting a message on my iPhone and on my iPad, in Settings, that reads “Confirm iPhone / iPad Passcode” and then says I need to confirm my iPhone / iPad passcode to keep using iCloud. This passcode also protects access to data stored in iCloud. I haven’t changed any settings or passcodes and my access to iCloud, along with iCloud backups, appear to be occurring normally. I’ve tried turning off the devices, but the message stays on. What should I do about this and why is it happening?

Hello there Dbawn,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. What you are experiencing is a normal part of the flow that protects sensitive data, like passwords, credit card numbers, and Messages stored in iCloud. Once you approve access, only the device that you sign in on can read your data. Complete details on your iCloud data can be found here:

We hope this helps you.

I’m getting this too, but only once a day. I will post this, just out of perspective on this “problem”. After living in the Apple ecosystem since the iPhone4, I think I’ve found iOS to be a powerful but quirky beast. It is a truly excellent bit of code that with that comes a capacity to be idiosyncratic on any particular device. Remember that data security and integrity is a central platform on which Apple stands.  Combine all this with the notion that Apple would rather annoy you than risk any compromise to your data, then it’s more easy to accept that on your device there’s a perfectly “rational” point to this occurring. Like others are saying you just have to do what it needs. There is a reason for it even though you might not rate it. I know it’s a pretty weird suggestion, but just treat it like someone you really love. Lol

You might need to enter your passcode or Apple ID instead of using Face ID in these situations:

  • The device has just been turned on or restarted.
  • The device hasn’t been unlocked for more than 48 hours.
  • The passcode hasn’t been used to unlock the device in the last six and a half days and Face ID hasn't unlocked the device in the last 4 hours.
  • The device has received a remote lock command.
  • After five unsuccessful attempts to match a face or fingerprint.
  • After initiating power off/Emergency SOS by pressing and holding either volume button and the side button simultaneously for 2 seconds.
