can video facetime use 2 way audio? Sound is only one way at a time

When I am talking to my family on video facetime, sound is only allow to move in one direction at a time. So if my kids are being loud in the background, the sound from the other can’t transmit until it is quite on my end and vice versa. It seems silly in 2023, 2 way audio is not an option? I don’t remember this being the case with Facetime several years ago. Is there a way to allow 2 way audio? Teams, zoom, gotomeeting, google, etc all allow two way audio. I went to settings but didn’t see a way to change this. When trying to talk with my entire family on facetime, we maybe get only 50% of the audio because it’s impossible to keep one side completely quiet so the other end can talk.

Hi clandherr,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. You can filter background sounds in FaceTime to help your voice sound clearly. This feature is not in the Settings app but in Control Center. Here are the steps to take, which will help improve the sound quality with friends and family in FaceTime:

Filter background sounds

When you want your voice to be heard clearly in a FaceTime call and other sounds to be blocked out, you can turn on Voice Isolation. Voice Isolation prioritizes your voice in a FaceTime call and blocks out the ambient noise.

1. During a FaceTime call, open Control Center, then tap Mic Mode.
2. Select Voice Isolation.

When you want your voice and all the sounds around you to be heard in a FaceTime call, you can turn on Wide Spectrum to leave ambient noises unfiltered.

1. During a FaceTime call, open Control Center, then tap Mic Mode.
2. Select Wide Spectrum.

Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum are supported on these devices: iPhone XR, iPhone XS models and later, iPad (8th generation) and later, all iPad Pro 11-inch models, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later, iPad Air (3rd generation) and later, and iPad mini (5th generation) and later.

That information is outlined in this helpful article and will help resolve your issue: Use FaceTime with your iPhone or iPad

Kind regards.
