Studio display with multiple peripherals having difficulty supplying power to all items

Hi folks,

I have a Studio Display with two MagSafe chargers and a lightning cable plugged in. One of the MagSafe chargers and the lightning cable have been in use for a while (powering an iPad Pro 13" first generation and an iPhone). The other MagSafe charger is new and it appears that with all three plugged in at the same time the display isn't sending power to the new charger. I've verified that the charger works by plugging it directly into my Mac, but I'd rather have all three hooked up to the display.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

RS

Why do you think it should? Support for charging is on the TB port only. From the spec:

”One upstream Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port for host (with 96W host charging). Three downstream USB-C ports (up to 10Gb/s) for connecting peripherals, storage, and networking“

The MagSafe charger isn’t a peripheral and isn’t meant for hooking up to a Studio Display. See How to use your MagSafe Charger with iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and iPhone 12 models - Apple Support.

By using the Studio Display and MS chargers outside their specs/recommended use, you’re risking their proper operation, not to mention warranties, inviting more issues down the road. I would stop the practice entirely ASAP before new problems manifest, including and especially a deterioration in display quality because of RF interference from MagSafe. All the best.

I expect the USB-C ports to behave like USB ports and provide a charge to iOS devices and any other peripheral that uses a lightning cable. This isn’t an unreasonable expectation.

As for the TB port, that’s in use (hooking the display up to the Mac). Additionally, I’ve been able to charge my MBP via one of the USB-C ports (not the TB port) previously using a TB3 cable. They’re very obviously powered.
