Apple TV no sound on movies after playing Arcade

I recently bought an Apple TV 4K 3rd gen and have started playing some Arcade on it. I noticed that after longer sessions (1h+) of Arcade, audio seems to stop working for almost all movies. Menu “clicks”, preview videos, games and music works fine, but when starting a movie on the Apple TV app, Netflix or Disney+, no audio plays. My setup is really basic, just the Apple TV connected directly to my Samsung Q70R with hdmi. It’s worth noting that the screen goes black for a second before the video/movie plays, and the Samsung loading icon appears. I’m guessing that’s just the tv wanting to setup some things like hdr, but I thought I’d mention that. I’ve checked both the Samsung audio settings and the Apple TV audio settings and stumbled upon no abnormalities (I might be wrong though). The only thing that resets the audio is switching hdmi port and letting the TV recognize the input device as an “Apple TV” again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS: The fact that I’m playing arcade before doesn’t mean I know that’s what triggers the sound issue. It’s just the only time it has happened.

Hi finnharkort,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

We'd first recommend unplugging the Apple TV from power for about 6 seconds. This might trigger the Apple TV to begin functioning as expected.

You should also be sure the Apple TV is updated to tvOS 16.2. Here's how to Update your Apple TV.

"Update your Apple TV manually

  1. Go to Settings > System > Software Updates and select Update Software.
  2. If there's an update, select Download and Install.
  3. Wait for your Apple TV to download the update. Keep your Apple TV connected and plugged in to power until the update is complete.

After the update downloads, your Apple TV will restart, prepare the update, then install it. When the update is complete, your Apple TV will automatically restart again."

If neither steps resolves the issue, we'd next recommend contacting Apple Support for a deeper dive.

Have a fantastic day!
