New out of box Apple Watch Series 7 stuck on “low battery please connect screen”

Just received a brand new out of the box Apple Watch Series 7 GPS/CELLULAR when turned on it says low battery please connect. I connected it to the charger cord provided and plugged the cord into the wall converter (20W) my father in law has for his newest version of IPad (verified to work as it charges his IPad just fine). After sitting on the charger for 5 hours it still has not changed screens nor is it showing any “lightening bolts” to indicate any charging at all. No stickers found on either side of the magnetic disc (even when first unraveling from box). I’ve tried restarting, I’ve tried hard reset, and different outlets throughout the house. Is it the watch itself or the cord? Why would either be bad upon just opening?

Hi Lnwun89,

Thanks for posting here in Apple Support Communities. You certainly shouldn't be having these issues right out the box. One thing we can have you try are the steps in this article as it may help to resolve your issue: If your Apple Watch won't charge or it won't turn on

"Get help if your Apple Watch won't charge

If your Apple Watch won't charge, or a message on your watch says that charging with this accessory isn't supported, try these tips:

  • Make sure that you're using the Apple Magnetic Charging Cable or USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable that came with your Apple Watch.
  • Make sure that you plug the Apple Magnetic Charging Cable or USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable all the way into the USB Power Adapter, then make sure that you plug the adapter all the way into a power outlet.
  • If you use a third-party charging stand, use the charging cable that shipped in the box with your Apple Watch.
  • Completely remove any plastic wrap from both sides of the charger.

  • Make sure that the back of your Apple Watch and the magnetic charger are clean.
  • Reposition the back of your Apple Watch on the charger. When the charger's magnets align correctly with your Apple Watch, a green or yellow lightning bolt green lightning bolt should appear on the watch face.*
  • Try a different Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable or USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable, and a different USB Power Adapter. If your Apple Watch is out of power, you might need to wait a few minutes for the lightning bolt green lightning bolt to appear after you start charging your device.
  • If your Apple Watch still won't charge, force it to restart. Press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears."

Sadly, yes, I followed all those steps to troubleshoot the issue before posting my inquiry.

In case anyone finds this thread because of the same dilemma -

I could not find a resolve of any sort so I had to bring it back for a replacement. Let me also say that the replacement I received had a dead battery out of the box as well however, fortunately for me, the new one was able to charge within minutes.
