install macos on SSD

Hello,

I installed an SSD memory on my iMac yesterday.

Then, I was forced to install Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5) when I first booted and connected my iMac to the internet.

Now, I can not upgrade it to the latest macOS version because I got followed error message:

What should I do in this state?

Thank you.

Hey lashphoton,

We'd be happy to help out. Sounds like you're currently on OS X Mountain Lion and having issues getting fully updated. We don't know what model iMac you have, so unable to determine the exact macOS version your iMac is compatible with.

Having said that though, you're going to run into trouble trying to fully update from OS X Mountain Lion, so instead, upgrade to OS X El Capitan 10.11 before attempting to fully upgrade to latest macOS version available for your iMac.

You'll find the link to download and install it here: How to download macOS

Once on OS X El Capitan 10.11, then try updating your Mac's software using the steps here: Update macOS on Mac

There it outlines the following:

Use Software Update
1. Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.
2. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
• Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
• Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.
3. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.
Software Update windowe
4. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.

If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only updates and upgrades that are compatible with your Mac.

We hope this helps out.

Take care!

Thank you UTBadger,

I downloaded El Capitan:

http://updates-http.cdn-apple.com/2019/cert/061-41424-20191024-218af9ec-cf50-4516-9011-228c78eda3d2/InstallMacOSX.dmg

Then, I installed it successfully due to my attached screenshot:

But now, there is nothing to change and still my iMac booted to Mountain Lion!

Also, I wrote this dmg image file to my USB flash stick by TransMac software but my iMac could not booted from it when I press [Option] key while booting process!

So, What should I do in this state?

How can I install MacOSX El Capitan?

For your information, my iMac run with Big Sur version of Mac OS when running with its old HDD drive.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your response.

I contacted apple support one hour ago and those guys told me that I should boot my iMac while pressing [Option] + [Command] + [R] and then install my old iMac OS X version which was Big Sur (When was used HDD) but, an earth logo appeared while rotating and after its bar completion, my iMac rebooted automatically and then still booted to Mountain Lion!!!!
