Mac OS upgrade

Current OS is Monterey 12.6.1. Have tried installing 12.6.2 three times; no joy. Also tried Ventura with the same (i.e., no) results.

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

That being said uninstall the Symantec and Webroot software according to the developer'er instructions.

Also unless you're using the Seagate drive for something other than normal off computer storage you should uninstall the Seagate software. It just interferes with the system's drive management capability.

I've had better luck from the Safe Mode because I evidently have some 3rd party software that interferes with the installation so try the following:

#1 - boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3-5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

#2 - go to the System/Software Update preference pane and begin the download.

#3 - run the installer from the Safe Mode.

Terminal Command will only search for full versions of mcOS this computer Qualifies to run

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

Depending on the output of above command

The follow Terminal Command will download the Full Version of the chosen OS

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.7.2

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 13.1

The Full Version are between 12 and 12.26 GB in size.

It will place a new application in the applications folder and will Not Auto Launch

Since the computer is experiencing issues UpDating or UpGrading - it is suggested to reset the computer in >>

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading

Once loaded - run the " Install ?? " version of chosen OS

Use the shareware app Find Any File to search for any files with webfoot in the file name.

1 - Name contains webfoot

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

If you can't delete the items do to their being open or used boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and delete from there.

Note:  if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode.  This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will assure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

I uninstalled appropriate apps and installed etrecheck. Ran the program but saw no Additional Text Icon. Found it in the question window. Copied the data and was advised to use the Share report icon. I tried posting it here, but there was too much text to paste. I'm very unsophisticated computer-wise, and if worse comes to worst, I can simply continue using OS 12.6.1. Thank you for your efforts.

You've done a lot of work for me; thank you. Removed MalwareBytes, Symantec, Mackeeper, Nord VPN, Flip for Mac. I couldn't find Webroot, not in Apps, Utilities, or Library.

That specific " Webroot " is a difficult one to find and remove.

Will have to research that one and get back to you, unless by colleague @ Old Toad who has vastly more experience than me could chip in on this one
