Did Apple disable adaptors that accommodate external drives with USB B

A few years ago, I had a MacBook Pro whose ports could allow USB C type. Thus, in order to use my external drives with USB B type cables, I had to use the adaptors and hubs to connect with the MacBook Pro with USB C ports. Everything went well.

I also bought a new iMac this year. And these adaptors and hubs worked well.

Until the other day, the adaptors won't work anymore. I tried to use these adaptors on my older MacBook Pro to use the external drives but they won't also work.

Is Apple prescribing a new specialized set of adaptors or hubs? The existing adaptors and hubs seem to be disabled.

Do the iMac and MacBook Pro apple prescribe specs for adapters.

My adapters worked well with both iMac and MacBook Pro for years....only to find out that they stopped working last Tuesday.

What happened "last Tuesday?" Did you update something, or did your computer perform an automatic update?

Look in About This Mac ... click System Report ... then under Software select Installations. Look for something that was installed or updated on the date that corresponds to the date when your problems started.

Two possibilities (this is not an exhaustive list):

  • Your Macs were updated and you have been using older non-Apple adaptors or hubs that are not compatible with the updated MacOS. What adaptors and hubs have you been using? Make, model, etc.
  • The problems may be with the external drives, not with the adaptors. What type of drives, what make, what model, how old? How are they formatted? Have you installed any software or firmware that came with the drives? This could include drive manufacturer utilities, tools, firmware that enables "push button" functions or special displays on the drives, etc.

Not that I am aware of, neither do Dell, HP, Asus or any other computer mfg. that I'm aware of. Instead of buying adapters have you considered upgrading your peripherals to have more up-to-date connections. If you are using External Hard Disks that are 4-5 years (or older) they should be upgraded anyway, why, simple all HD's die and it's smarter to be proactive.

Dear Rkaufmann:

Happy New Year. And I'm back from the holidays. I answer as follows:

  1. I checked Systems Report- Software- Installations and found nothing in the last 2 weeks of December.
  2. I have been using the Link Hub+ adaptor which was sold by Powermac, an authorized Apple Reseller in Manila. It worked for years. Until 27 December (Tuesday). I also bought Firmlink C Suite from a reputable computer shop but it won't work either. Please see photos.
  3. My drives are fairly new. Not one older than 3 years. They are all from Seagate One Touch with USB B connector (Please see photo)
  4. When I used my Seagates with my Macs I would first re-format them to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
  5. No, I won't install software of Seagate into my Mac
  6. I talked to a Senior Specialist from Apple Support and advised that Seagate may have a problem considering that all my Seagates with USB B drives could not be detected by the Mac.
  7. Well, there were 2 Seagate External Drives that were detected but it was so difficult to access the contents.
  8. By the way, the Seagate External Drive with USB C could be read by my Mac.
  9. Apple Support also advised me to upgrade to Ventura 13.1. But it did not solve the problem.

Thank you very much. And Happy New Year.
