Macbook shuts off unexpectedly

My macbook pro 2017 turns off and says that it is dead when it is not. It only does this if I turn it on without it being plugged in, but after being on and plugged in for a few minutes I can unplug it. So like it technically doesnt need to be plugged in to work but to stay on if that makes sense. Anyone know why and if it can be fixed?
