Mail: Minute-long pauses with message area blank, before loading

Problem noticed months ago, slowly getting worse. When opening a new mail message, the message area sometimes appears blank for as long as a full minute before the text loads. This appears to be a pause or stall in the whole app, it still responds to mouse clicks but other messages do not load, either.

Mac Mini late 2014, Monterey 12.6.1, Mail 16.0, active mail connections include two IMAP accounts (Gmail) and one Exchange account (alum.mit.edu).

Just waiting out the delay always seems to work, it's not a permanent freeze.

"Force quit" during the pause always has shown Mail running normally. It had has never said Mail was "not responding." During the pauses, the Activity Monitor has never shown unusual Mail CPU usage.

Rebuilding the mailbox did not help.

Cleaning up the mailbox by deleting large numbers of message or moving them to another folder did not help.

Quitting and re-launching Mail has not helped.

Since the pauses last about a minute, it is hard to tell cause-and-effect. Trying anything sometimes gives the illusion of working but it's just because you've spent a minute doing something.

P.S. Showing two identical Mac mini devices for me and I can't tell which is which, so let me repeat the Mac I am using is Mac mini late 2014 running Monterey 12.6.1

Yes. This is totally normal. Not desirable, obviously, but nothing you can fix. The best you can do is hope Apple eventually re-writes the Mail app. Apple is steadily porting iOS versions of various apps to the Mac. Hopefully they will do Mail next year.

Hello Daniel P.B. Smith,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We see you have some questions about Mail and seeing a delay, and we'd like to help. We see you did a lot of great steps so far, so let's try and see if this is happening across more than one user account. This can help us isolate this more.

Let's have you create a test user account, to see if the issue remains there:

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Add a user
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .
If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
2. Click the Add button  below the list of users.
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
• Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
• Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.
• Sharing Only: Sharing-only users can access shared files remotely, but can’t log in to or change settings on the computer. To give the user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change settings in the File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management pane of Sharing preferences. See Set up file sharing and Share the screen of another Mac.
For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.
7. Depending on the type of user you create, you can also do any of the following:
• For an administrator, select “Allow user to administer this computer.”
• For an administrator, select “Allow user to reset a password using Apple ID.”
• Use Sharing preferences to specify whether the user can share your files and share your screen.
For information about Apple’s privacy policy, see the Apple Privacy Policy website.
If your Mac or Magic Keyboard has Touch ID, a new user can add a fingerprint after logging in to the Mac.

Also, the latest macOS Monterey version is 12.6.2. You'll want to back up and update your Mac:

Regards.
