My Apple mail seems corrupt. When I delete emails they come back to my inbox. Then when I delete them again, it deletes ALL my files emails. Then an (!) pops up on the screen and Apple mail stops functioning. I delete the app and reinstalled it but it repeatedly does this. What could be the cause and how can I rectify it. I dont like using the Google gmail format.

How many email accounts do you have? If you have multiple email accounts on your Mail app, see if the same behavior occurs for those accounts as well.
Also, try logging in directly to the email service provider's website and check to see if the emails come back after deleting them. We're curious if this is only happening with the Gmail account and with the Mail app.

Thanks so much for the reply. I followed the steps you listed above but the gmail account still gives me the “exclamation point” and then all my filed gmails disappear. The only way to get them back is to empty the trash and I get every single email that’s been deleted since 2015..junk mail and all.
Hi there. I only have one email account. I did sign into gmail through my service provider. Had all 2000 emails cleaned up and deleted. I re-installed the Mail App and all of the deleted files came back again. I just can’t go that again. Took hours to delete them all. Help!
Also, the deleted emails only came back on the email App, but now all of my filed emails that were in folders are back in my Inbox on my service provider gmail access.
