"Adjust keyboard brightness" missing on 2019 Mac

My keyboard only lights up when logging in, after logging in no backlight whatsoever. The settings toggling suggested on various websites do not help as it speaks to settings which are actually missing. The adjust brightness control does not respond when you try to drag it.I have done other resets like SMC to no avail. I suspect its something to do with these OS upgrades. Has there been an update on Apple addressing the issue?

Hello nos_mas,

Let's try to resolve the issue by completing the steps listed here: Turn your Mac keyboard’s backlighting on or off. Those steps are also listed below.

"Automatically turn backlighting off after a period of inactivity

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Keyboard  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click the pop-up menu next to “Turn keyboard backlight off after inactivity” on the right, then choose a time."

Best regards.

Hi nos_mas,

Since the behavior is system-wide (happens in multiple users), and you're missing settings that should appear on this version of macOS, we'd like to have reinstall macOS.

While reinstalling macOS does not remove data from your Mac, we'd still recommend backing up your Mac. How to back up your Mac provides some options to back up.

From there, you'll want to follow the steps in How to reinstall macOS.

  1. "Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold Command (⌘)-R until you see an Apple logo or other image.
    • If the installer asks to unlock your disk, enter the password you use to log in to your Mac.
    • If the installer offers you the choice between installing on Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD - Data, choose Macintosh HD.
  • Allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart and show a progress bar several times, and the screen might be empty for minutes at a time.
  • After installation is complete, your Mac might restart to a setup assistant."

After you complete these steps, check to see if the keyboard backlight works as expected or whether the expected settings appear in System Settings > Keyboard. If you continue to experience issues, contact Apple Support.

Regards.

Hello nos_mas,

Let's try to narrow this down and isolate it more by testing in safe mode and a new user account.

Safe mode prevents certain software from opening and also forces the computer to run some disk checks similar to First Aid. This can actually resolve some issues. More information on starting to safe mode and steps to take after starting there can be found here: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Intel processor

1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.

2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.

3. You may be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see "Safe Boot" in the top right-hand corner of the window."

If the issue continues after the steps from safe mode, create a new user account (administrator) to see if the behavior happens there. This will let us know if it is system-wide or something within your user account: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac

Delete a user or group on Mac (to remove the test account once completed)

Let us know what you find.

Cheers!
