Apparently, after many years of allowing Preview to open MS Office documents that functionality has been removed. You can drag and drop a PPTX or PPT document onto Preview's icon in the Dock and nothing happens, not even an error dialog. These document types are not selectable in Preview's File chooser. If you click on the document in the Finder and press the space bar, Quick Look will preview the document.

Your options in terms of Powerpoint compatibility, are to open that Powerpoint document in LibreOffice (it will open in Impress), or Apple's Keynote (translation) if you have that already installed in Catalina.
