Macbook Pro M1 2020 consumes a lot of battery when sleep.

Hi all, I have been having problems with my Macbook Pro 14 M1 2020 for several days. Basically the Mac consumes a lot of battery while it is in sleep mode (20% at night (8 hours)).

The Mac is about 1 year and 3 months old, and has been used more or less mixed between attached to a desk and on battery power. The use was for programming and video calls.

As far as the operating system is concerned, the latest version of MacOS Ventura is installed on the Mac, via clean installation (done two weeks ago) via flash drive.

The battery currently has a maximum capacity of 86% with 140 charge cycles, which is not encouraging (I've already spoken to support about it), but I don't think it's the real problem, indeed perhaps it is a consequence.

Writing on reddit a user advised me to install Sleep Aid, and by running it for a whole night the program actually shows me anomalous behavior. I am attaching everything to the post.

Can someone help me ?

Hello BeppeTemp,

Let's use the steps below to boot your Mac into safe mode to see if that behavior persists from there:

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

You can also find those steps in this resource: How to use safe mode on your Mac

It can take a few extra minutes to boot into safe mode. Your screen may flash or flicker while in safe mode. Those behaviors are expected. Testing in safe mode runs a check on your disk, removes some cached files, and can help isolate conflicts with startup items. Once you've tested that behavior in safe mode, you can restart to leave safe mode.

Let us know how that goes, and we'll keep moving forward based on your results.

Hello and thanks for the reply.

From what I wrote the post I continued to do some tests, I also formatted the Mac with a flash drive going back to Monterey and the problem seemed to have resurfaced (see image) although now it seems to have reappeared, the strange thing is that I don't understand what it is the offending app, if there is one, since none in particular seems to wake up the Mac.

In any case, I'll try safe mode for a whole night and let you know.

I tried to boot in safe mode, but the behavior was the same. I therefore decided to make one last attempt this morning, reformatting the Mac with Monterey, after which I created an offline account and left the Mac in sleep with only the wifi on for 3 hours, the battery then went from 76 to 73% , now I'll wait another 3 hours to see what happens, but at this point I'm assuming it's a hardware issue.
