How to control Homepod Mini volume on iPhone

When I have iPad mini 6 playing through homepod mini I want to be able to control the volume with my iphone 12 mini. This used to work for me. I can now only see the volume control on iphone ‘control other speakers’ but it is not active. I can pause but not change volume. Advice would be appreciated, thanks.

If you’re AirPlaying from the iPad, the controls will only be available on that.

If you have an Apple TV 4k set up in your Home and have set up a HomePod to be the default audio on it, you might be able to use it’s Siri Remote to control volume.
