Those Mac's do not support a cabled Target Display Mode setup.
Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support
You will have to look into using a network solution,
like Mirroring the two displays with AirPlay > AirPlay - Apple
or Sidecar > Use an iPad as a second display for a Mac - Apple Support
The best option is to get a third party display to use with the MacBook Pro or iMac.

This refers to connecting a display not a mac computer to use as a second display. The only way I've found to use another mac is to use a third party application such as Luna Display or Duet Display to make another mac act as a display.

You can not do that, because those Mac's do not support it.
There are third party software that will allow you to use your iMac as a display. I currently use Luna Display. It works will with both Macs on Ethernet. I'm currently connecting a 2012 iMac to a 2020 iMac.

Den.thed, no problem. I have 2 27" iMacs and it would be a waste not to able to use the second display. Takes up my whole desk.
