Put Hard Disk to Sleep option missing after selecting only battery

Hi all, I've just noticed that my macbook pro 16inch M1 Pro suddenly won't go to sleep after closing the lid a few days ago. Not being sure what was the reason but I've decided to try and change the settings for Put Hard Disk to Sleep.

It was at "never" since I set it last time before I upgraded to Ventura to stop external hard disk from going to sleep in the half way copying files. And now after I changed it to "only battery", the option just suddenly disappear and now I have no way to find it or access it to change it back. But the good news is that the mac now sleeps when I close the lid.

Has anyone encountered this and how can I find back that option?

After updating to Ventura 13.1, the setting is still missing and occasionally my mac still wouldn't go to sleep after closing the lid. This drains the battery life and cause the mac to heat up when I keep in my bag. Is there really no one experiencing the same issue here?

I read from another post that such options ain't available for M1 SSD Macs. Not sure if yours is one of these. Mine is. Some other posts suggest MacOS is struggling with bizarre bugs when sleeping on such models. Not sure if they're simply removing the option to save the effort. I think we'd better call Apple Care for some clarification.

Regarding the official doc, Apple so far has failed to push it to the level it should be. Just use IBM's Knowledge Center and Microsoft's Knowledge Base for comparison, if an option isn't always applicable, it should be well documented when and why it isn't. How can they leave end users baffled like this.

Not yet. Reinstalling the OS? It sounds like an overkill.

To me the absence of such options doesn't affect sleep. Instead it's stopping my music play from Hey Siri. Music stops as soon as the screen goes dark. It's actually more annoying than it sounds.

I actually have some ideas for you to experiment should you want to.

Idea 1: Set your Mac to sleep automatically after idling for a period.

It's not what you expected, but should solve the problem.

This gives you a minute count till Mac sleeps:

sudo systemsetup -getcomputersleep

This sets it to 3, which should force the Mac to sleep after idling for 3 minutes. With the lid closed your Mac is sure idle.

sudo systemsetup -setcomputersleep 3

This gives the full potential of this command. With great power comes great responsibility. Don't toy with it!😆

sudo systemsetup help

See here for reference: https://osxdaily.com/2015/02/03/set-or-disable-sleep-due-to-mac-system-inactivity-from-the-command-line-in-os-x/#:~:text=How%20to%20Set%20Mac%20System%20Sleep%20Idle%20Time,before%20the%20Mac%20sleeps%3A%20sudo%20systemsetup%20-setcomputersleep%2060

Idea 2: Something is wrong with your Mac's power management

This doesn't sound good, but is probable. Just imagine the power management falsely gives a status of "Charger connected", Mac would consequently behave accordingly.

Try checking Settings > Displays > Advanced > Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.

If your current status is checked, the guess is more likely to be true. I would suggest disabling the option to watch for any improvement.

make some changes to your settings and compare your results...

if you are near the mains leave your Mac plugged in, run on battery only if you need the portability.

After testing a few days, I realised that last night, my Macbook Pro didn't go to sleep again. I have quitted all the apps, not sure which one is running in background. Can anyone help to show me how I can identify the real culprit here ? Activity monitor is showing too much stuffs that I couldn't understand.

Yes I totally agree with you on this. There's no one who has helped here in this community nor any further discussion. Maybe this issue is new and not much people has faced this. I'm using M1 pro SSD Mac but that doesn't explain why I have the option before, like before i choose battery only. And i never have this Mac sleep problem until the hard disk to sleep thing or maybe it's a software that I installed.

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't let the mac to go to sleep during idle because when I render videos or copy files it will consider the mac as idle and will go to sleep halfway.

My setting for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off, is checked. now I unchecked it to monitor the status. But I wonder how to solve this if it really is this problem.
