Interrupting my podcast when remote starting to warmup the car - Prioritization of BlueTooth Devices?

Scenario:

Using Airpods with my iphone in the house while listening to a podcast and I remote start the car to warm it before before leaving. The phone connects to the car and plays the podcast to an empty car in the driveway.

The same thing also occurs when someone else starts the car which is a bigger surprise.

Correct Behavior:

When a bluetooth device is actively being used, it should not be disconnected automatically when another pops up online or don't disconnect airpods if they are in my ears

Options:

The order of devices can be changed such that a lower priority device won't disconnect a higher priority device. Or perhaps you can measure distance/signal strength and not connect to a car unless you are actually in the car.

I would expect this annoying lack of understanding use cases from other companies, but this is Apple! Is there some fix that I am missing?

Hello RCutright,

Thanks for that additional info.

Te best option is to leave feedback to let Apple know of this. Maybe there is something they can change in future updates. Right now, it's a third-party car and car stereo, third-party remote start system. Also, when connecting an iOS device to a Bluetooth or USB accessory, music may begin to autoplay. This is expected behavior. So users aren't listening to silence, many stereo manufacturers will send a playback command from the stereo to the media device upon connection. There is no setting to disable this on iOS, however some stereos might have the option to disable this.

If you still have questions, please contact the vehicle or stereo manufacturer for further assistance. Contact a third-party vendor - Apple Support

Thanks.

Hello RCutright,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help you get the most from CarPlay and to prevent the AirPods from joining CarPlay.

You could try turning off Auto-Join:

"Make sure that your stereo is in wireless or Bluetooth mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned off."

This Apple Support page has the full details: Use CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support

This could help to resolve the issue you're seeing.

As there isn't a direct setting for this, we welcome you to submit this feedback here: Product Feedback - Apple

We hope this helps to resolve the issue between CarPlay and your AirPods.

Cheers!

In this case it's a car without CarPlay (2018 Toyota), but I don't think my point came through clearly. I would still like it to auto-join, just not when I am already actively listening on my Airpods and preferably only when I am in the car and not still inside the house for 10 more minutes as the car warms up and defrosts. I think that fundamentally people would want their airpods to take preference over other devices and not be bumped when they are using them to have their conversation or podcast just start randomly playing in the car.
