Sleep focus turns off automatically in the middle of the night (iOS 16.2)

Ever since I updated my iPhone to iOS 16.2, Sleep focus has been turning itself off in the middle of the night and I get woken up by notifications.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Set Sleep Schedule to wake up at certain time (let's say 8:30am) with Alarm on
  2. Turn on Sleep Focus

Expected behavior: Sleep Focus remains on until the wake up time set in step 1

Actual behavior: Sleep Focus turns itself off in the middle of the night (before wake up time)

I have tried:

  • Restarting all my iCloud devices (iPad, Apple Watch, laptops)
  • Deleting my Sleep Schedule from Health and creating agin
  • Deleting Sleep Focus and creating again

This is very frustrating since I keep getting woken up by notifications in the middle of the night, and I have to manually enable Sleep Focus again

Since I have an iPhone 14 Pro, Sleep Focus is generally useful since it completely turns off the Always On lock screen

Hi - I had exactly the same problem as everyone describes above. All updated to the latest versions (16.3), all rebooted multiple times (keep Apple support happy). I still had the same issue.

However, I seem to have fixed it by:

  • In Health -> Sleep -> Full Schedule & Options -> Turn off the "Use schedule for sleep focus".
  • In Shortcuts -> Automation -> Create a Personal Automation
    • Set Focus
    • "Turn Sleep On until Time X am Tomorrow"
    • Schedule this to run at your bedtime, in my case 22:30.
    • Of course if you go to bed after midnight it will need to read "Turn Sleep On until Time X am" but you get the drift of what I'm doing.
  • The sleep schedule alarm still works etc.. so there is no issue of you not getting woken up either.

This has worked perfectly for me for the last couple of nights.

I have an update after 16.3. First night after 16.3 install it didn’t work - Sleep Focus turned off automatically (but note, my watch was still on 16.2).

Last night it seem to have worked fine. Things I’ve made sure:

  • All my devices were on 16.3 (I have more than one iPhones)
  • I have deleted Sleep Focus - made sure it got deleted from other devices too and restarted all the devices including Apple Watch (this step probably wasn’t necessary but I did it anyway)
  • Recreated Sleep Focus
  • And it worked fine last night - stayed on till my Sleep Schedule turned off

I think the issue is very much linked with the Apple Watch - make sure it’s on 16.3 - do a restart as well to be 100% safe (or other iOS devices). My wife doesn’t have any other iOS devices and she never had this issue

Good luck and I hope it continues to work for me - I will give an update after few days

I have the exact same problem and tried everything that you’ve tried. It’s started after installing 16.2. When the Sleep Focus turns on automatically via the Sleep Schedule, Sleep Focus automatically turns off at some point at night, it could be before midnight, after midnight - I couldn’t find any pattern/reason for this behaviour. But if you activate Sleep Focus manually then I think it stays on till your Sleep Schedule ends. Only hope is now 16.3 which is out in couple of days but worries me not seeing anything regarding this in the list of bug fixes for 16.3

I manually turn my on as I get into bed, firstly to mute notifications and secondly to turn off my always on display so this doesn’t keep me awake.

This can literally turn itself off as I receive a notification with in as little as 15minutes of me turning it on. Soon as I toggle it back on for a second time it does seem to then stay on for the remainder of the night.

I turn my Sleep Focus on manually when I go to bed every night. Within about five minutes, Sleep turns itself off and my Always-On screen turns back on. When I manually turn Sleep back on a second time, it then stays on. This scenario has been happening literally every night since about 3-4 weeks ago. I have tried deleting my Sleep Focus and then recreating it, but that doesn’t help.

Similar. My sleep focus turns off every morning at 06:00 rather than my setting of 06:30 for weekdays and 07:00 for weekend. 06:00 was a previous sleep schedule. I’ve checked the health app has the right schedule. Toggle is on to use focus with my schedule and I can see the right times in the focus schedule yet it switches off early and notifications start pinging
