Mail app really CPU-hungry

Somebody else asked this about the new Monterey OS, but I'm still running Catalina (10.15.7). I've noticed my computer being really slow (e.g. I type a sentence and then wait twenty seconds for it to be echoed), across a wide range of apps, for weeks or months. I fired up Activity Monitor, and it said Mail was using 115% of my CPU.

So I quit the Mail app, and things improved immediately:

Among other things, the computer is having no trouble keeping up as I type this :-)

I have been having a similar issue. When I wake my MacBook from sleep, mail will show that it is not connecting to my accounts and it will be using high CPU. Once I restart mail, the problem goes away until next time I put the computer to sleep and wake it up.

I recently went into internet accounts and de-activated my email accounts, opened mail, then closed mail and re-activated the accounts. I'll tell you if that resolves the problem.
