Dolby Vision/Hue Sync Not Working

I have the new Apple TV 2022 and the Hue Sync Box and I can't get it to work with Dolby Vision. It works fine with HDR10+ (and every other version of HDR) and works fine with SDR, but when Dolby Vision is enabled it won't do anything. I have made sure to try both ports 2 and 4 on the Hue Sync and I'm using very high quality cables, but it still doesn't work. My Nvidia Shield Pro works just fine using the same setup, so it has to be an Apple TV issue. My TV is a series 6 TCL 2022 (r655).

And I have tried both with and without the Dolby Vision comparability selected in the hue sync app.

GUYS I FIXED IT. I MADE AN ACCOUNT JUST TO SHARE.

Anyone reading this, I am sharing after 1 day of excruciating troubleshooting. Few things that are NOT factors: cables (I use fairly generic cables, only one of them is 8K and is not in the chain.)

My setup is ATV4K -> Hue Sync Box -> LG C2 -> (eARC) Sonos Beam

Dolby Vision (60Hz) and Dolby Atmos work, together with Hue Sync.

What I had to do:

  1. Swap to port 2 or 4 of the Hue Sync Box if not already using it (higher bandwidth)
  2. Hue Sync App go to Sync tab -> Three dots -> Advanced -> Dolby Vision enhanced compatibility and switch it on. It will give a warning about "degraded image" ignore it, it doesn't do anything. Your picture will likely reset, and your TV will show HDR mode. This change set my ATV4K back to a generic HDR mode, not DV and reset most image settings.
  3. Sync should now be working correctly, turn it on to verify (duh ofc, as it is basic HDR and not DV)
  4. Go back to ATV settings and switch Dolby Vision 60Hz on. It should now keep the sync AND work with DV.
  5. Change whatever additional picture/audio settings you want, they don't affect anything.

I have now watched several movies with Dolby Vision + Atmos + Hue Sync all working correctly.

Apparently the "enhanced compatibility" setting used to be called HDMI compatibility (you can see this in older Reddit threads).

After a lot of playing around with different configurations, it seemed like playing with the audio format within the AppleTV settings finally fixed the issue for the Hue Sync app to finally show that it was connected and syncing. My final AppleTV configurations are audio format: Auto, Atmos Available. Video Format: 4K Dolby Digital. My setup is, AppleTV > (HDMI cable: premium high /HEC - I think the one that came with the Hue Sync but I don’t recall) > Hue Sync Box > (HDMI cable: AmazonBasic) > TV (Sony) | TV eARC > (HDMI cable: Visio sound bar supplied cable) > Sound Bar (Vizio)

Hope this helps.

I’ve been having this issue for a while. I do not have the 2022 4K, but I have the 2nd generation.

When I first purchased the AppleTV, it worked fine with DV, however, it was broken some way.

I reached out to both Apple and Hue and they both pointed to fingers at each other pretty much, HOWEVER, what was ultimately told to me is that there are different types of DV and if your TV and AppleTV aren’t using the same type, the Sync of DV will ultimately not work.

doesn’t make sense but it sounds like it really is an issue with AppleTV 4K, but the hardware compatibility also isn’t there as Hue Sync Box uses “pass through” tech.

Yep I tried that. They had a lot of suggestions but nothing worked. The reason I think it's an Apple TV issue is because my Shield Pro works perfectly using the exact same cables. I can literally take the HDMI cable out of the back of the Apple TV and plug it into the Shield Pro instead and Dolby Vision with Hue Sync works. I've made sure everything is updated and I've tried lots of different cables, HDMI ports, and even different streaming options that support DV like Netflix, Amazon prime, Apple TV, etc. I guess it's possible I got a broken Apple TV, but it's just odd that this is its only issue.

Unfortunately I have not found a fix for this. I got the cables recommended and that did nothing. I even used the exact cables and exact ports that I was using with my Nvidia Shield Pro (which works just fine with Hue Sync and Dolby Vision) and still nothing. It has to be an Apple TV issue since the Shield Pro works fine.
